Beware of Perfectionism

Have you ever thought “I’m holding out for the perfect guy and won’t accept anything less”?
Or maybe you’re overanalyzing every detail of a date, looking for signs of what might go wrong?

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Perfectionism can be a sneaky obstacle in the journey to finding love, especially if you’ve been navigating the dating scene for a while and negative experiences in love and relationships are more relatable for you than positive ones.

The issue with perfectionism in dating and relationships

Perfectionism may seem like a good thing at first; why not try to make the best possible choices and have high standards?

The harmful and sabotaging aspect lies in the emotions that tend to come with it: stress and fear. As perfectionists, we don’t just happily set ourselves (and others) high standards that we love working towards. Actually, the opposite is true. We get anxious the moment we identify a goal: What if I fail? What if I get hurt? What if others see me as a failure?

And so, perfectionism can be a paralysing prison where we’re alone with our high standards and live a life of missed opportunities.

Here are some of the patterns that can hold you back if “good enough” is often not good enough for you:

1. Setting unrealistic expectations

When you expect a potential partner (or yourself) to be flawless, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. Looking for someone who matches you in every way, who reads your mind and anticipates your every need can cause you to overlook someone who is a diamond in the rough.
Holding on to unattainable standards can make dating feel more like a high-stakes test than an opportunity to connect and have fun.

2. Fear of rejection

Perfectionism often comes hand-in-hand with a heightened fear of rejection. You may avoid taking risks, like asking someone out or being honest about your feelings, because you’re afraid of making a mistake or being vulnerable. You might be misunderstood or rejected.
But someone else’s response isn’t a reflection of our worth. It’s simply part of the process of finding the right person who truly appreciates you. In fact, if you date 50 guys, there will be 49 no’s and just one mutual YES, so getting comfortable with rejection is key if you want to get dating practice and meet the one.

3. Overthinking and overanalyzing

Ever caught yourself replaying conversations in your head, trying to figure out if you said the “right” thing or if they really meant what they said? This can take the joy out of dating and prevent you from being present and authentic.
No-one expects you to have all the perfect answers. It’s ok to mess up and be insecure – as long as your intentions are good, you learn from your mistakes and you offer a sincere apology when it’s due: that’s the best anyone can do. It’s being human.

4. Difficulty with vulnerability

Vulnerability is a key ingredient in forming deep, meaningful connections. But perfectionists often struggle to let their guard down because they want to control how they’re perceived and avoid criticism. (This was why I kept attracting commitment-phobe men; they mirrored my fear of being vulnerable.) Showing your authentic self, imperfections and all, allows for true intimacy to develop. It’s okay to let someone see the real you. In fact, it’s not only ok, it is the only way to feel truly seen, loved and accepted in the end. The fact that getting vulnerable is scary is the price we pay for love.

5. Self-sabotage

When you’re always looking for flaws – either in yourself or in potential partners – it can lead to self-sabotage. You might unconsciously push people away, find reasons to end things prematurely, or stay stuck in indecision. By focusing on every little flaw you could be missing out on the opportunity to build a meaningful connection and be with someone who you learn and grow with, side by side.

6. Paralysis by analysis

Perfectionism can make every decision feel daunting. Should you swipe right or left? How should you phrase that first message? Is it too soon to suggest a second date?
Overthinking can lead to hesitation and paralysis, making it difficult to move forward. Instead of getting stuck in your head, try trusting your intuition. Sometimes the best things happen when you take a leap of faith. And then you have the chance to learn if things don’t work out.

How to overcome perfectionism in dating

The first step to overcoming perfectionism is awareness. Recognize when your fears come up, when you’re in your head, tense and worried. Gently remind yourself that you’re much healthier, happier and attractive when you’re relaxed and that you choose to trust yourself.

This doesn’t meant that you ignore your head completely. Quite the opposite: we need to reflect and understand how to date in our best interest, but it’s important to get into action and allow a bit of messiness while we’re figuring things out. Every learning curve comes with mistakes – we just want to be prepared enough that they don’t cost us too much. At some point, we need to take the leap and jump in!

The reward of taking the leap

Dating isn’t about finding someone who checks every single box you’ve every come up with; it is about discovering someone who brings joy, support and understanding into your life. When you let go of the need for everything to be perfect, you open yourself up to authentic experiences, real connection, and the possibility of finding lasting love between two flawed human beings.
As long as you have enough clarity about what truly matters to you in a relationship, you can use your non-negotiables to guide you – along with your intuition and heart.
