By the time we’ve got a few years on the clock, one thing is certain: we’ve all been hurt in relationships. Some wounds fade more quickly, but others run deep.
Pain isn’t easy to sit with, and life goes on with its demands and responsibilities. We often feel the pressure to pull ourselves together and soldier on. Sometimes, we simply don’t know how to heal or struggle to stay consistent with what we know would help.
It can feel easier in the moment to numb or distract ourselves. We bury our pain under work, Netflix, alcohol, social media… or we jump into another relationship. For a while, we can tell ourselves we’re fine, but unprocessed pain always finds a way to sabotage our happiness and health.
What we really need after heartbreak
True recovery means taking care of ourselves, feeling what we’ve pushed down, and gently releasing it. It takes support and acceptance – from ourselves, but also from another person who we trust and feel safe with. We need to experience that it’s ok to feel, and that no matter what we’ve experienced, we’re still worthy of human connection on every level.
The foundation for a healthy relationship
A lasting relationship needs two people who are, at least to some extent, emotionally “fit”. The foundation for this fitness is self-care; when we nurture ourselves, we can enter into a relationship with enough resources to navigate all aspects of life. When we take responsibility for our own well-being, love becomes a choice and a gift, not a dependency.
My story: from co-dependence to partnership
I’m saying all of this because I’ve lived through it. I know how unhealed wounds impacted my ability to choose the right man and connect with him.
In my first marriage, I was carrying suppressed pain I hadn’t faced, hoping that a relationship and starting a family would make everything better. But the magic fix I was hoping for never came; I learned the hard way that inner work can’t be outsourced.
Eventually, everything collapsed: first my mental health, then my marriage.
That’s when I realised that healing and happiness are first and foremost my own responsibility.
By the time I met my second husband, I hadn’t reached permanent zen (who ever does?), but I had done enough work to be a genuine partner, able to give and receive emotional support.
The cost of carrying old pain
Heartbreak leaves traces: beliefs about love, safety, and self-worth. If we don’t heal, those beliefs keep driving our choices:
- “I always attract emotionally unavailable men.”
- “It’s safer not to hope too much.”
- “I’m worried about losing myself if I let someone in.”
Those patterns once formed to protect us, but there comes a point when they can keep us stuck and lonely.
Healing is a process
Emotional healing is about letting go of the past so that you can reclaim your power to choose love and open up to it. However, recovering your confidence and faith in love doesn’t happen in one day, and it goes through stages.
That’s why I’m excited to share the transformational online series Heal from Heartbreak with you. Through several expert presentations, it offers a roadmap for moving from pain to possibility:
- Acknowledging your story – seeing what really happened and how it shaped you.
- Releasing emotional residue – freeing yourself from old ghosts.
- Rebuilding trust and confidence – feeling safe again in intimacy.
- Opening your heart consciously – learning to love without losing yourself.
My part in the healing series
I’m honoured to be one of the speakers in this series, guiding through the part “How to trust love again without losing yourself”.
In this part we explore:
- How to set standards rooted in self-respect and boundaries.
- How to recognise the difference between healthy and unhealthy love.
- How to reconnect with your intuition so you can trust love – and yourself.
Why this matters
Healing means that you stop living in the past and finally move towards the future you want. It frees up energy, it allow you to feel lighter and more joyful – which is really attractive energy for dating and building something new.
