Last week, I recorded a podcast episode with the lovely Claire Melvin, mindset coach and host of Discovery Corner®, a podcast supporting women to navigate the twists and turns of midlife with confidence.

We’re the same age (50 this year), and Claire is single herself. So she takes a personal interest in finding love later in life.

We talked openly about what it really means to look for a relationship when you’re no longer in your twenties.

Because more and more women are single (again) in midlife.

Some leave their partners or spouses.
Some are left.
Many realise that they want more from life and from relationships.

And suddenly, they find themselves in the dating space again – in a very different season of life.

Dating in midlife is… a lot

If you’re in your 40s or 50s and dating, you probably recognise this.

You’re juggling work, home, children, ageing parents, and your own health and finances.

And on top of all that, you now need to “put yourself out there”, stay hopeful and choose wisely.

No wonder it feels challenging.

At this stage of life, more is at stake.
Your standards are higher.
Your tolerance for drama is lower.
And you’re far less willing to waste time on something that doesn’t feel right.

So the real question becomes:

How do you find clarity and emotional depth – when life is already full?

You can listen to our full conversation here.

“Should I get a new top?” - the temptation of quick fixes

One question Claire asked stayed with me:

“How much attention should women pay to tips like: ‘Get a new top’?”

It’s a great question; after all, we all love quick fixes.

Buy a new outfit.
Change your haircut.
Download a new app.

And to be clear: there’s nothing wrong with any of this.

Feeling good matters, confidence matters, presentation matters.

But let’s be honest.

There’s a difference between profound changes and cosmetics.

If a car needs its engine serviced, a fresh coat of paint won’t fix the problem. It may look better – but the breakdown risk is still there.

It’s the same in dating.

Surface-level changes can help you feel better.
But they don’t change what’s happening underneath.

What a new outfit can’t fix

A new top cannot heal:

  • fear of rejection
  • difficulty trusting
  • over-giving and over-adapting
  • avoiding difficult conversations
  • struggling to express needs
  • staying too long in unclear situations

You can’t dress your way out of emotional patterns.

You can’t swipe your way out of self-doubt.

And you can’t “optimise” your way out of old relationship wounds.

That’s why, in Conscious Dating, we don’t start with cosmetics.

We start with you.

What actually changes your dating life

Real change doesn’t come from doing more.

It comes from going deeper.

From learning to:

  • strengthen your relationship with yourself
  • listen to your body and intuition
  • recognise old patterns early
  • respond differently to fear
  • choose what serves you long-term

It’s about learning a calmer, more grounded way of relating.

And that doesn’t happen through the click of a button.

It happens through awareness, reflection, and practice.

Through questions like:

What’s happening in me right now?
Why am I reacting like this?
What would align with my values here?

This is the work that creates emotional safety – first within yourself, and then with the right partner.

Depth over speed

We live in a culture that loves “quick and easy”.

Instant attraction.
Immediate reassurance that we’re soulmates.

But deep, meaningful connection is built over time.

Through shared experiences, exploration and growth.

It grows when two people protect their own needs while carefully opening up to each other.

There is no app, outfit, or formula that can replace that.

Conscious Dating is a journey, not a hack

Finding lasting love isn’t about hunting for tips that will magically make your person appear.

It’s about you – connecting with yourself and showing up more fully.

More grounded.
More clear.
More emotionally available.
More discerning.
More self-respecting.
Less apologetic, less careful, less polished.

It’s a process of discovery and transformation with you in the starring role.

And who you become in the process – that’s what determines your next partner and relationship.
