A lot of women who are dating are chasing one particular feeling:

Attraction.

It’s number one on their list of selection criteria, and when it’s  present, they often feel the urge to move things forward – to message him, call him, meet him…
They want to lean into the romance.
They assume their intuition is speaking.
They assume this feeling is meaningful – that it’s a sign they should act on.

But should you really?

Understanding what causes the feeling

From the perspective of Conscious Dating, it’s essential to pause and ask:“What is this feeling actually about?”

When we slow down enough to look beneath the surface, attraction often makes sense in very human ways.

You might feel drawn to someone because:

  • He’s fun, engaging, and good company – and being with him makes you feel less lonely.

  • He gives you attention, admiration, and interest – and you miss feeling important to a man.

  • The flirting is fun and exciting – and it makes such a wonderful change from routine and duties.

All of this is understandable.

But none of it tells you whether he’s a fit as a good long-term partner.

Early attraction tells you that something feels pleasant, familiar, or stimulating.
It does not tell you whether there is emotional safety, shared values, or long-term compatibility.

When attraction becomes a trap

The early stages of romantic connection come with a powerful biological cocktail. Hormones are released that make closeness feel urgent and intoxicating – while at the same time making it harder to see clearly.

This is where many women repeat patterns that cost them time and energy.

Women can bond very quickly, especially when we feed an initial attraction with fantasies, touch and time spent together. When we allow feelings to take over, we often override our ability to:

  • notice inconsistencies,

  • take red flags seriously,

  • test for the important green flags and

  • draw boundaries when something feels off.

What seems like “following your heart” can actually be a version of self-abandonment.

When feelings are strong, we often interpret them as love.

But feelings and love are not the same thing.

Feelings are not something we can control – and they don’t always guide us well.
Imagine you feel like eating an entire cake. The craving may be strong, but you probably don’t act on it – because your rational brain tells you that it’s not a wise choice.

Dating works in a similar way.

Feeling drawn to a man doesn’t mean he’s right for you.
Sometimes it simply means your nervous system recognises a familiar dynamic.

For many women, intense attraction is a signal of potential codependence and dysfunction – not compatibility. You might be feeling the pull of the anxious–avoidant dance that you can play out with this particular man, yet again.

 Beware of the “lightning bolt”

Some of the strongest attraction I’ve experienced in my own life – the kind that hit like lightning – was with men who were completely wrong for me.

They were charming, articulate, intellectually stimulating.
But also unavailable, unreliable or dishonest.

The chemistry was real. The relationship potential was not.

This is where you might be asking yourself:

“What if I only feel attraction to unavailable men – and the good matches feel boring?”

What you can control

You cannot change what you feel in the moment.
But you can choose your thoughts and your behaviour.

Instead of telling yourself:
I’m feeling something – so we should move this forward as fast as possible.

You can choose a different response:
I’m feeling something – and I’m choosing to take the time to see whether we are actually compatible.

Finding a balance between heart and head is what Conscious Dating is all about.

It doesn’t ask you to suppress feelings or force yourself to settle for a match without attraction.

It asks you to notice what you’re feeling and slow down the dating process.

What to look for

When you slow down, you create space to test for the qualities that are at the heart of lasting love:

  • Is he kind and emotionally available?

  • Is he dependable and consistent?

  • Is he generous, respectful and able to communicate?

  • Do we share key values and life goals?

  • Do I feel safe in his presence – can I be myself and open up?

These qualities don’t always create fireworks in the first few dates.
But they do create something far more valuable: trust, stability, and emotional safety.

When you practise Conscious Dating, something important shifts over time.

When you stop chasing mismatched attraction, when you stay focused on the qualities that really matter for commitment, there comes a day when you feel drawn to a man who is right for you. Not as a high-adrenaline, short-lived adventure, but as partner you feel deeply connected to.

The first step to the relationship you want is a decision you can make right now: say no the emotional rollercoaster.
Choose patience and faith – with Conscious Dating you’re moving towards true, lasting love, even if you can’t hold his hand yet.
